My male and female Leo were in BAD shape when i traded our hamster for them. The previous owners were clueless on their care and did not treat them well. The boy had one of his balls burst and i was told they would not be able to mate. The previous owners said they left the 2 together all of the time. I was brand new at Leo care and did all of the proper research to ensure i would provide them with a happy life. I nursed them back to health...changed their environment and fattened them up. Their eyes were closed shut for almost a month because the previous owners never provided a moist hide box...causing skin to build up SO BAD in their eyes that it had literally pushed their eyeballs back into their heads. I used Q tips and tweezers every day until their eyes were clear, open, and able to eat on their own. This was about a 1 year ago and up until Thursday they were fine. They mated and our female has begun to lay her clutches of eggs. The male remained in the tank because he leaves the female alone and they had been housed together all their lives with no problems. The last week our male had begun to stop eating....stop pooping, and he just became more and more lifeless as the days passed. Thursday he was laying in the middle of the cage completely lifeless so we took him to the bathroom to put some lukewarm water on him and try and force feed him since he had not been eating. He gasped for air twice and then stopped moving all together. Prior to last week i had no problems or concerns with either lizard. From the research i have done today i can only think that this was either sand impaction...which by the way....i removed the sand, cleaned the cage, and replaced it with cage carpet. I am so sad that he died and wish i could have prevented it. If any one has any ideas of what might have happened PLEASE let me know because i still have my female and plan on keeping her for years!! She is eating good, pooping good, and still producing eggs, licking her vitamins and her tail is nice and fat
