I recently purchased 2 hatchling red foots complete with terrarium setup up.
Over the last few days Ive begun to noticed that one hatchlings eyes has become fairly dry and tend to stay close most of the time. When he does open his eyes, it looks drowsy and he seems to be having difficulty locating the food properly. He will walk up to the food and try biting the air next to it as oppose to biting into it.
After some research to find a cause of the problem. I stumbled onto a website which says uv rays is bad for red foots as it can damage their little eyes.
To what extent can the above statement be true? I didnt think UV rays could be harmful for them. All the websites and caresheets didnt mention this. In fact all most if not all recommended using uvb.
Anyhow, my concern is the zoo med ReptiSun 10.0 UVB compact bulb that been installed. The light is rather close, mounted vertically about 8" off ground, which I have now refrained from using.
Was the uvb too strong/close and have since damaged its eyes? and if so is the damage permanent? Will it heal? and what else can be done about it?
Any help or advice you can recommend would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
