WARNING!! Read Carefully

It has recently come to our attention that certain reptile companies have started selling Chlorhexidine Diacetate as a disinfectant, perhaps in an attempt to enter our market for Chlorhexidine Gluconate which is approved by Health Canada and recommended by Toronto Animal Services for use with reptiles.

Please be advised that Chlorhexidine Diacetate is a PESTICIDE. The manufacturer’s web site states:

"In acute toxicity studies using laboratory animals, the Agency [EPA] concluded that chlorhexidine diacetate is mildly to moderately toxic when administered by inhalation, oral and dermal routes. However, in repeat primary eye irritation studies, the chemical is severely toxic. In a subchronic dermal rabbit toxicity study systemic effects included degenerative changes in the livers of females.

… Chlorhexidine diacetate generally is of low to moderate acute toxicity, but is highly acutely toxic when applied to the eye. It causes liver effects in animal studies.

… Chlorhexidine diacetate is slightly toxic to avian species … moderately to highly toxic to fish, and very highly toxic to aquatic invertebrates."

Please think before purchasing anything made with Chlorhexidine Diacetate. If it costs significantly less than other similar-sounding products there’s probably a good reason for it.
