Chameleon

Chameleon

Housing: Chameleons need a surprising amount of room.  They require lots of plants, branches, and vines for climbing and hunting on, as well as for their emotional well-being.
Ventilation is extremely important when keeping chameleons, and may be difficult to achieve properly.  Humidity and warmth need to be maintained, while allowing for plenty of air circulation.  Luckily there are many chameleon-specific cages available now that help maintain these requirements for new owners.
The proper enclosure will be tall and have at least two sides (if not all sides) made of a soft mesh material.  All glass enclosures should never be used.  A rain or drip water system must be used for drinking, and should be supplemented by misting or weekly showers in your own bathroom, especially for larger species.

Environment: Chameleons should have the opportunity to move around the cage as their temperature needs change, and different species will have different temperature requirements.  Generally the ideal conditions will have high humidity with temperatures ranging from 75 to 100 degrees, depending on the species' natural origin.  Be sure to research your specific species (veiled, panther, four-horned, etc.) for the correct temperature and humidity levels.  Misting should be done daily to maintain humidity levels (or a humidifier or automatic misting system can be installed).  UVB lighting is highly recommended.
Feeding: Variety in the diet is key to having a healthy chameleon.  Aim for at least five different insect species, as well as vitamin supplements.  Feeder insects should be fed live, and offered daily, with a weekly coating of calcium/Vitamin D powder.
Choices in live foods include: silkworms, crickets, mealworms, waxworms, fruit flies (for young chams), houseflies or other wild caught insects (MUST be free of pesticides), cultured tropical roaches, and the occasional small lizard (such as an anole).  Feeder insects should be gut-loaded with vegetables and other nutrient-rich foods prior to being harvested for the chameleon.
