Prolonged laying for a childrens python
« on: October 19, 2006, 09:20:15 AM »

Hi All, One of my childrens pythons laid 9 eggs on 19/9/06. She was still looking quite plump but did not lay anymore eggs. 18 days later I found 2 more eggs in her enclosure and then again a week later (last Monday) I found another 3. None of these eggs were any good by the time I found them but did have little snakes inside, so my guess is they were fertile when laid. After closely examining her I decided that she was still carrying more eggs and decided to watch her very closely. On Tuesday night she laid another egg, this one was really smelly which was of great concern. By lunchtime yesterday she laid another, this one was hard but not smelly.
After consulting with 2 different vets they have advised me to leave her alone now as she doesnt appear to have any more eggs and is her normal bright bitey self. I wil be watching her very closely over the next month or so tho and be seeking veterinary advise if needed.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this before?
Thanks Letti

I personally would have had a good hide box packed out with vermiculite or clean peat with a little excesses humidity.
This would help settle the animal and assist you recover all eggs from one area, as she would lay them and cure around the eggs and rest out.  Wink

After speaking to several python breeders, this is not a common thing but does happen. (nothing my family or animals do is ever by the text books)
My little girl is eating well now and well and truely back to her bitey self.
Also I never leave my pythons in their normal enclosures to lay, but move them to other boxes.  This works really well.  She was back in her normal enclosure when she started laying the extra eggs as we thought that she had finished laying and had no more eggs left and to actually go 18 days between the first 9 and next 2 is very unusual. Plus she ate during this time also.
