Red-eared Sliders
« on: October 19, 2006, 05:34:58 AM »

Red-eared Sliders (Trachemys scripta elegans)
Size:  Up to 8 inches. Housing:  Half land/half water environments.  Typically with calm water, with many plants, and sloped edges for entrance/exit.
Air temperatures should be kept around 75 degrees with no drops or drafts.  An undertank heater or heat lamp will help keep the water warm.  Full spectrum lighting is also important. Food: Almost exclusively meat-eaters when young, but gradually becoming herbivorous as they get older.  There are also many commercial foods designed for sliders.

Small fish may be enjoyed as a treat. Lifespan: Up to 20-40 years. Behavior: Diurnal.  Love to swim, and come on land to bask, sometimes stacking on top of each other (think Yertle the Turtle).
Short hibernation period.

This is some helpful information for people whom don't know much about them. You should also mention to watch out for what pet stores you buy them from if you even buy them from one. Breeders are always a better choice.

Hello out there, I am new to the forum.  Does anyone have semi-aquatics inside?  I keep mine outdoors May through October, but I have to bring them inside for the winter.  I am in Bellevue,  (Omaha) Nebraska .

Thanks, Linda

I have kept the critter but in no way regard myself as a turtle master.
Let me know what you need ReptileMan27. Maybe I have what you are looking for. I try keep things to a point as it becomes irrelevant if not.

I am in Michigan. I had a RES for 17 years. I kept him inside for the most part. maybe for a month or 2 he would be outside during the day and I would bring him in at night. I presently have a Red belly cooter that is inside 90% of the time as well
