Leopard Tortoise (Geochelone pardalis)
Size: Adults can reach 18-24 inches long..
Housing: The recommended temperature range is 75-90 degrees F, with a basking area of 100 degrees F. High and constant levels of light and warmth are a must. Low humidity levels are needed. A water dish should be offered for soaking, but not above the tortoise's head.
Indoor tank should be 50 gallons minimum. Should only be kept outdoors during summer or in "tropical" environments.
Food: Herbivores. Alfalfa, grass, flowers, some fruit, and vegetables (especially dark leafy greens). Feed fruit sparingly for best health. No meat should be given, and protein-rich veggies (like beans or sprouts) should not make up a large portion of their diet. Keep in mind that their natural diet is made up of coarse, high fiber grassland/desert plants. Lifespan: Up to 40 years.
Behavior: Do not hibernate, but must be kept warm year round to maintain activity and metabolism.
