I have a friend who keeps venomous but he has all his licences to do so. wat i find upsettin is he is not allowed to store anti-venom so if he is bitten he has to have it shipped from liverpool and it costs a couple of grand
i myself wouldnt keep venomous (unless i have done courses on how to do it correctly in the next few yrs) but he keeps his well and locked up tight. he has a beautiful rattlesnake which is always out basking and she is stunning
i dont agree with these idoits buyin them in illegally and bringing out to show of to their mates that makes me sick...not even just venomous but any animal bought as a novelty for someone to show off with is wrong, animals werent put on this earth specifically for us, they have a right to live

To put the cat among the pigeons let me put my 5 cents in.
I was bit because I got a little too complacent so yea, I do not mind if people call it being stupid because in my opinion it was dang stupid no matter that I have more the 20 years experience.

But it is good to have survived it and that is a lot more than the dead can say. Wink

I also don't mind if someone wants to call me stupid for my mistakes. Fortunately I'm smart enough to know that I'm NOT stupid just because someone else thinks so.
I dont think she ment you personally is stupid, atleast I hope not Undecided

Anti venom must be administrated by a medical professional or not at all. If the patient has the antivenin and has no other choice O.K but remember anaphylactic shock kills the patient just as dead.

In my opinion systematic medical treatment depending on the species may take a little longer but all’s good that ends well.

I don't agree with hots being kept in residential homes.

Any hots should be kept by zoos and universities for training, education and research only.  These animals should be kept under very safe conditions and a license must be obtained.

I believe that the license should be worked towards - like an apprenticeship or pilots license.  Where you clock up a certain amount of hours working with hots in an environment with a qualified keeper/trainer with multiple species.  A written test must be completed along with a first-aid test and they must re-train every x amount of years.

I think you should have to get special training or something to varify you are able to care for and handle the hot snakes when nessisary, before you can get one.

Simon your opinion about some special only the chosen few should be “allowed” to keep venomous is somewhat bias.
People should be given an option for training yes but that should be a choice and not some bureaucratic pinhead rubbish.
What makes you and Autoshoty think a zoo worker has more knowlage that someone like me who has been doing this longer that either of you have been in this world?
There is no special training other than experience as the book is a guide and the rest is life.
More people are killed by domestic dogs, cats and horses than snakes so yea lets see you try insist on special licenses for these animals.  Roll Eyes

I do agree with what your saying but these are more dangerous then most dogs, dogs are generally agressive because of their owner, and if thats the case, they dont attack the owner. A snake doesent know or care whether you are its owner, it sees you as a predator and will try to kill you every chance I get. Dog attacks ate also alot more common becuase their alot more common then hot snakes, if their were as many people keeping or trying to keep hot snakes as their is dog keepers, you would see alot more bites. I really am not a dog person myself, personally I would rather deal with a hot over a aggressive dog coming at me but thats me, I have worked with reptiles for years and defently have more of a clue on what to do with a hot snake then a mean dog.

ReptileMan27 a snake will aggressively defend itself and will not intentionally want to do anyone harm. So in saying this it is a misconception to believe that a snake will “attack” like a dog.
I am aware that more people are killed in South Africa by horses than snakes so as this country has its fair share of “hots” the myth that snakes are more dangerous than domestic animals is trollop.
Sorry ReptileMan27 but I loose my sense of humour when I hear people making up solutions to myths.

By the way I was a dog handler in the military many years ago and have five dogs at present but that is another story Wink

I never said they WANT to attack people or go looking to bite people, you misunderstood what I said. Hots are NOT PETS, they should not be in a normal house setting. Their is a big difference between wild hots and captive ones, I am not talking about in the wild, this all has to do with keeping these animals as pets. IMO their are very few people that should attempt to keep hots, most are not willing or able to afford to keep them properly and safely, so this is how accidents happen. I cant say what happens where you are but their have been problems here in the USA with people keeping hot snakes.
