Hundreds of dead iguanas...


More than 400 endangered iguanas were seized in Guatemala from a bus leaving the Atlantic coast for the city of Mazatenango.

But even though the lizards were spared from their usual fate—being butchered for their meat and eggs—three-quarters had already died of suffocation after being wrapped in newspaper for the journey.

The Guatemalan National Civil Police's Nature Protection Division helped secure the animals as part of an ongoing effort to curb illegal harvesting that has devastated iguana populations in Central America.
