Injured Monitor, need advise!
« on: February 12, 2007, 09:47:24 PM »

Hi guys, i just retrieved an injured baby malayan water monitor from my friends house 2 hours ago. My friend found her dog carrying it in its mouth and got it to drop the monitor.

It's just about 1ft long excluding the tail.
It didn't move when i picked it up, eyes still open and breathing.
The tail is broken i think, and its toes are bended wierdly.
Tail bled but stopped bleeding, belly near back leg wounded and bled but now kinda stopped, still abit of bleeding.
I put it on a dry cloth under a exo terra heating light. Now it craweled under a small closet but its ok since that room is small and it can't go far. Can easily grab it from under any furniture there.

My main concern aside from internal injury is one of its semi-transparent parts on the side of its head, bout 1 inch from the eye is punctured. Pardon my poor use of terminology, I duno much bout this animal.

Ne advice and suggestions? hope i can rehabilitate it

sorry i lack pics, cant upload them.

get it to a vet
the injuries sound severe and if it has injuries to the head it is in grave danger.
it needs to go to a vet for inspection, possibly xray, antibiotics, operation, euthanaisia.
its prob in severe shock, and also sounds like its been out the tank for a while too, so this is prob y u were able to handle it so easily.
if u cant get to a vet rite now keep it in the tank, warm dark and quiet, dont try feeding but as i say i would be gettin it to a vet asap
let us no how it gets on

Well watr monitors have a tendency to play dead when threatened. In this case I do beleive that this animal is very injured and MUST go see a vet. You must also be able to properly house this animal. You said that you know very little, did you know that this animal should only eat bugs and low fat things and will get probably 5 feet+. If dont think you can keep it, put the animal down and out of its suffering.
