i had hoped 2 of my females would get along for life as they were intruduced young, had a large viv with plenty basking sites and were the same size but they have just started fighting in the last few days.
up until now they have been great, basking and feeding together no hint of trouble at all. they are coming up for 6 months old and now decided they hate each other.
i have just build and fitted out a four stack of 4ft vivs so it wasnt a problem just a damn shame.
iv read females can live together happily in some cases and i hoped so much this would work.
just a little warning for anyone considering doubling there beardies up.
the beardies will decide if it will work not you so be ready with a second viv just incase, as a bullied beardie will stop feeding and basking and go down hill fast.

I too, had exactly the same problem - The simple answer is Bearded Dragons are Solitary reptiles and prefer to live alone any way - so when you hear of people saying they enjoy each others company take this with a pinch of salt - There will ALWAYS be a dominant model because a hierachy will build up wether there is 2 or 22 lizards living with each other!  They will bask seperately (usually the weaker/or less dominant dragon pushed down to the cooler end of the tank) they will feed after the dominant dragon and become less active and hide more frequently - I built a 2 storey vivarium which is 5ft high with stable walk way up to the top floor - Both levels are exactly the same have seperate eating/feeding/basking quarters and guess what?? it worked!! Although the dominant dragon Moved in on the top floor with no argument and the smaller dragon on the lower floor which she prefers!! Win win situation and 2 healthy dragons! plus both floors are accesible for either dragon and now they don't even bother each other.  People will probably disagree with this method - But it works for me and my Dragons.  I would still only advise other people to start up with one dragon as with little experience and more than one dragon you will be asking for trouble! male or female.  Can i also make a point that females are more common to buy in shops so there will be more of them available than males. If you are unsure of the sexes of dragons give us a shout with a picture and i'll do my best to diagnose! although i can only do this accurately with dragons over 6mnths old - Thanks.

Yikes, well at least you were there to break it up and it didnt keep going until onw eventually killed the other.

i knew the chances of them getting on long term were low so i was prepared for the worst, pitty though as they looked happy together 90% of the time.
i would never ever attempt this with males but thought it was worth a try with females.

I have never had beardies who could live together.   My females are always toe pickers and the males ended up wiht toes falling off.  I don't think my feamle is agressive, so just picks at anything that moves and toes are just too irresistible!!!

If i am correct i  believe it is because they have just hit sexual maturity but i could be wrong because i don't no the exact date they were born and put together unless you happen to remember?

they were put together at 8 weeks and they are now nearing 6 months.
your probably right, i put it down to maturity also. still a shame though it was a citrus and a picasso and they looked great together.

you're probably wrong actually - the first breeding season or coming into adult (sexual) maturity is usually skipped at such a young age - i think the youngest i ever heard of dragons becoming sexually mature or breedable was about 8 months allthough this is NOT recommended as your dragons bodies are not up to optimum performance in that respect - although back to the point - toe nipping and tail nipping has nothing to do with eating anything that moves or mistaking it for something else - it's supposedly just one of those things that happens in group communities where one dragon gets cheesed off with his personal space being invaded! teritorial act.  It is their natural reaction to go for something that fits in their jaws! sometimes another dragon will also grab a hold of the back of another dragons head too and clamp its jaws on - until its damn ready to let go! LOL.

Oh wow, I am glad you separated them before anything serious happened.  Unfortunately, most of the times, one is gravely injured.  Just glad that didn't happen.  They normally just cannot be housed together.  It is extremely rare that it is succesful.
Did you have another available tank to put the other one in?
