does this apply to all animals?  If so, you'd better start protesting about people keeping cattle, since they are no longer native to anywhere on the planet.  Better watch what kind of dogs or cats you have around too, since I don't know of too many native species in Australia...

And that's a fair enough point, but I don't think the fact that we have tampered for hundreds of years with livestock and domestic animals gives ANY justification for doing so with herps. That's like saying that because there have already been so many wars, if we start one more it won't hurt. Herps are new enough a pet for things to change!

sorry to go back to your point timotei but, sure we breed for colour and it does give us added pleasure but the main thing should surely be that the animals are not suffering in any way.

I belive what Timotei is trying to say is that we are dirtying the gene's of Bearded dragons by breeding parents and siblins together...Say you have 2 Sandfire bearded dragons, one male one female, you want to try your hand at breeding so oyu breed them, you produce offspring, most of the babies should look like ther parents but there is a chance that you could produce a couple "hets" (A het is a animal that carries the gene's of its parents but does not look like them) so you produce 2 hets from your clutch, They turn out to be a male and a female, so you breed them...They should produce Sandfire babies that will look like grandparents but nothing like there parents becuase there parents are hets.
This is a common mistake that breeders make becuase they dont add new blood lines. ( This can be down by simply purchase another Bearded dragon that isnt related to the Beardies you already own ) by adding a Beardie that isnt related to the ones you already own you will create new blood lines which is essential in breeding, look what happened to dalmations they were bred to quickly becuase they were a new trend so people began breeding Mother with Son which dirtied the blood lines.

i hope ive help cleared this up, if i missed anything or something wasnt clear enough feel free to tell me and/or add what i had missed.

105-110 is only for babies not adults. Adults should have 95-100
Although this is the recommend tempertures I find my dragons do better at about 115.  They are more active and are not laying under the basking light trying to keep warm, they thermoregulate back and forth throughout the day.  The cool side is about 80.

My babies liked it at about 115 and my adults like more 105

Well, i'd also lyk to lay this topic to rest, so i'll just say finally to clear it up:

All i meant was that there is no gain in breeding to colour, except for the keeper. Simply, if it doesn't help the animal, we should not do it. The fact that it does not harm them is not justification enough.

This is not what the original topic was about anyway! So let's let it be  Smiley
