Mealworms??
« on: January 09, 2007, 02:34:03 AM »

Look good, smell good and taste good to your dragon! but BEWARE not a recommended food for your little fella and certainly not a staple diet! The Meal worm is an extremely addictive food for your dragon - and is very hard to ween them off them once fed for a sustained period, so If you must - only use as a treat for ADULTS! I have known young beardies (under 14mnths) to obtain digestive problems eating these as a staple diet because of a chemical called chitin in the shell of the worm... There are difficult for your young beardie to digest especially under the incorrect conditions (eg, wrong temperature and uva penetration) so if i were you - i would avoid at all costs - even adults - Although saying that - I have also know A Beardie to eat them on a regular basis - BUT - Better be safe than sorry!

Hope this information helps anyone in doubt!

actually chitin is a very thin layer underneath the shell of the worm like a thin skin that contains a chemical to produce the hard shell for the worm as his line of defense! hence DEFENCE! so once again use at your own peril.

I have never fed them. and never will. There really is nothing in them thats good for a bearded. there is so little meat. I have fed superworms though but to dragons over 15 inches do the the risk of digestive problems with them as well..

yes thats true but not so much as mealies!, wax worms are also a treat and not suppose to be a staple diet as they apparently contain high fat and sulphur - but are suprisingly good for feeding skinny and dehydrated lizzards to build them back up at a higher rate as long as they are coated with the recommended vitamin and calcium powder amounts- but beware of runnier, smelly'er poops!

Yeah Its weird that even superworms are healthyer then mealies because superworms have less harder shells and there more of what you wont in the inside.
I breed mealworms and sell them to fishing shops and the petstore
(sometimes I feed them to my lizards but I like to stick wit better feeders) Wink

mealworms a treat Huh, never heard that. I agree they shouldnt be fed to young beardys or as a staple for adult beardys but never heard of them killing beardys. Alot of people feed them without probs, mealies seem to get alot of bad rap and its 99% myth. They eat threw lizards stomachs Roll Eyes

I never feed my beardie mealworms. All he gets is crickets, and some super worms from time to time.
