bowl feeding
« on: December 31, 2006, 11:18:08 PM »

what is your opinions on feeding live foods from a bowl?
i feed my beardies this way to reduce the chances of escapees as there is nothing worse than a male cricket up behind a radiator chirping away all night when your trying to get to sleep.
some folks dont agree with bowl feeding as they want the beardie to hunt them out, what do you think?

I currently use a bowl for feeding everything but crix to two of my dragons.  The third kinda eats out of the dusting container that I have, because he's lazy, and his cage allows crix to escape easily.  The first two primarily eat in a seperate enclosure, because they seem to have been trained to do so by their previous owner.  In fact, the one wont eat in his enclosure unless really stimulated, and even then, will barely eat anything.  Take him out and put him in the feeding tank however, and he eats his fill.
Really, it's all up to you, however you wish to feed your dragon.  One could argue that feeding prey in a dish could lead the dragon to become lazy, and possible over weight, if it doesn't get the exercise, but I don't know of any proof behind that.

I feed from a bowl as well with no problems.. I dont feed crickets but the roaches and supers stay in the bowl well.  I have had people say it will promote laziness as well. but none of mine are lazy..  They will run around. just not usually chasing food..

I feed Wax and super worms from bowl as well as veg and rocket salads - but, the easiest way to feed crix is not to throw them all in and watch him hunt them down - put them in say - ten at a time - as any remaining crix are supposed to be removed to prevent them Feeding on YOUR beardie over night! I find that if i remove the logs and accesories when feeding crix so that theres no where to hide they will eat them all on sight & movement and is quite enjoyable to watch too! once they've finished (eg, not eating anymore in that session) i remove any remaining crix and place all the accesories back into the tank.  My pair will usually eat about 100 crix per session before a full belly sets in!
