Range: Mexico- Puebla, Morelos,and Oaxaca.
INTRODUCTION: Pueblan milksnakes are a small and beutiful colored snakes. They are in the same family as kingsnakes. They are a very popular and one of the most commonly kept milksnakes out there.
SIZE/HANDLING: Pueblans are one of the smaller commonly kept milk species out there. Baby pueblans are 9-10 inches and adult Pueblans usaully get 3-4 feet as adults. Baby pueblans like most baby snakes tend to be really nervous and sometimes nippy but most will calm down with age and gentle handling. When handling your pueblan, Do not squeeze it but just gently hold it and let it go threw your fingers or rap itself around your hand or arm. Pueblans like most milks tend to always be shy and nervous but very rarely bite if there use to being handled. Make sure to always wash your hands with soap and water after handling any snake . Pueblans are not venomous but do have a mouth full of little sharp teeth and can bite. Depending on the size of the snake and location of the bite, it may or may not break the skin. If it does break the skin then make sure to wash the area with soap and water really good. Putting alchol on a bite is also a good idea to avoid the risk of infection.
HOUSING: Baby pueblans can be kept in a large critter keeper,5-10 gallon tank,or a small rubbermaid type container. Make sure that what ever you decide to house you snake in, has a secure cover because snakes are escape artists. Adult pueblans can be kept in a 20 long gallon tank with a secure cover or an appropriate sized rubbermaid type container.
SUBSTRATE: Pueblans can be kept on newspaper, paper towels, reptile carpet,or aspen shavings. DO NOT USE CEDER OR PINE BECAUSE THEY ARE TOXIC TO YOUR SNAKE AND WILL KILL IT.
HEATING/LIGHTING: Pueblans like most snakes dont require any UVB or any special lighting. Under Tank Heaters(UTHs) work best for heating pueblans and are important to help with digestion. A regular house hold bulb works good for heating to. The UTH or light should be placed on the one side of the cage that is the warm side and were the hide should be. This creates a warm and cool side and allows your snake to thermoregulate, which means he can decide were he feels comfortable instead of having the whole tank just one temp. The water dish should be on the cool side and another hide can be added on the cool side to.
TEMPERATURES: A ambient daytime temp of 75-85 degrees is best for pueblans. Nightime temps can drop down to 65-70 degrees.
HABITAT: Pueblans are best kept in dry conditions. If your snake has problems shedding then misting the cage during shedding is a good idea. A humidity box can also be used to aid with shedding,if needed.
FOOD/WATER: Baby pueblans can start out eating pinky mice and working there way up from there. Adults should be fed adult mice. Pueblans should be fed ever 7-10 days. Make sure to have a bowl of clean water in the cage at all times. Its also a good idea to make sure the water dish is big enough for your snake to curl up in if it wants to.
