more info on girlfriends turtle
« on: December 26, 2006, 09:53:31 PM »

Ive been asking around and so forth and i found out the turtle my girlfriend has is a box turtle. Shes doing really well right now. Just out of curiousity im thinking of getting a larger tank and a better substance to put in it instead of kitty litter to help my gf out.

Its diet

Dog food
Bannanas
other veggies
(and the occational spider)

Lighting
Needs to be replaced

Tank
To small needs a alarger one

It does have plenty of water and seems happy to a point it lets me hold her and when we bring her outside she has a field day. She cant wait for summer :-D

PLEASE...take the turtle OFF the cat litter.. I am surprised it has not been effected by it.. Cat litter is pure clay, which will cause respirtory problems as well as blockage if eaten. Better to use coco fiber(bed a beast or eco earth).. You can get away with rabbit pellets IF..there the water is in an area it CAN NOT get tipped over.. or the pellets will mold and stink..

I keep my boxies on a soil/bed-abeast mixed in with dead leaves.. But I also house them in a giant, 55 gallon, rubbermaid tub...big plastic thing.. Lots of space for 1 (I have 3 in it).. Gives them good digging space..plus it does not leak or break..

As for food, I would get rid of the dog food.. offer it nightcrawlers for the protein. If you've never seen a turtle "RUN" toss in crickets...and add in dark greens..like collards and musturd greens..

Hope some of this helps..

I agree with Frogqueen..
If you want you can feed the box turtle food Its in a can I think zoomed makes it. But you are better off feeding the leafy diet and crickets and stuff occasionally.. Do you know what kind of turtle it is. I have some caresheets I can post links to for you if you need..

Dog food once in a while won't hurt. I give my boxies canned cat food during the breeding season.. My big female likes the tuna variety...and since she lays large clutch every year, I give her extra protein..

Just make sure you add the dark greens, like collards or dandilions..flowers go well with boxies.. AND, add some animal matter...boxies need it more than most turtles.. Nightcrawlers, crickets and mealworms are easiest, but snails and slugs are great too...as long as collected from safe areas...

Dog and cat food is not good for boxies, its not made for them, and can be extremely unhealthy. It is good to feed box turtle food and lots of vegies.

Make sure that it also has a place to soak.
