I personally do not like hybridizing animals as the end result is for the human and not the animal. This also destroys the gene making the animal less appealing to me.

I have seen this debate before and it usually is a struggle between the naturalists verses the profiteers with the indifferent being uninformed.

the hybrid debate is one that will age forever.
I personally like alot of hybrids and I do breed hybrids between rat snakes and corn snakes as this does  sometimes occur in the wild. I personally would not breed hybrids of this that would not breed naturally i.e need tricking into breeding but I must admit that I do like alot of them.
I feel as long as  anything sold is clearly labelled as a hybrid is fine.

I do however feel very strongly about also maintaining good stocks of pure species for the future.

Its all a matter of personal choice.

I do breed hybrids between rat snakes and corn snakes

A Red rat snake & Corn snake is the same thing (same animal). Yes there are different rat snakes as in greys, blacks, yellows and are found in different regions in the States. These animals can breed if paired up as these chaps are subspecies of each other but are divided geographically.
For them to breed in the wild is the exception and not the rule.

I personally dont mind hybrids in captivity. They are cool looking, I always hear that hybrids are bred just for the money, I agree that has alot to do with it but how that any different then anyone breeding to sell any herps?. Its a hobby and its nice to make a little money on the side to help with your hobby. I personally dont sell or breed any herps right now but dont see anything wrong with it.

Yea, granted it is a hobby but by creating a hybrid you destroy a gene pool and were is the beauty in that?
For an example if an animal is becoming scare and on the endanger list as in being threatened with extinction the last thing a reasonable human being would want to do is help the species into extinction by breeding it with a another species so the young are not either.
Hybridizing does nothing for the animal or its species but is a novelty for humans that will go out of fashion and then.

I think I better shut it about know. Angry

rat snakes and corn snakes breeding in he wild is the exception and not the rule. I personally would not breed any other hybrids then these which may seem hipocritical but thats just what i am personally comfortable with. I do sell these hybrids often for less then a pure corn i breed.
