Heat rocks are commonly found for sale in pet stores and online. Even though they are very commonly found for sale, they are not safe for herps. They get very hot and have seriously burned many reptiles. Besides for their danger their also pretty much usless for heating your herp cage, they are only good if the reptile is sitting right on it which for most herps, isnt very likely because they prefer to hide rather then sit out in the open. They seem to be mainly used for iguanas,monitors,and tegus, they are one of the few reptiles that will commonly use a heat rock but its not safe for them. They are very unreliable, one sec they are cool to the touch and the next so hot they will burn you or your reptile. The problem is when they sit on it and it gets to hot, they dont seem to know their being burned intill its to late and I have seen some pics of some really bably burned iguanas from heat rocks . If anyone has a link to one of the pics I am refering to, please post it for people that dont believe unless they see. Heat rocks/hot rocks or whatever you want to call them are overpriced and dangerous for reptiles. The only good and safe use I have found for them is to cut the cords off and use the rock as a decoration, an expensive decoration at that.

Why do companies still sell calci sand?, its all a money making thing. Anything they can make money on they will sell. They can sell it to novice keepers that dont know its not safe, they label these products as safe and novice keepers dont know any better, I didnt when I use to use calci sand.

in slight defense of the companies selling heat rocks, most are safer than they used to be.  for the most part, they now have built in thermostats to control the temp.  this still doesn't excuse them from trying to market them for species like bearded dragons, that sense temps on the top of their head, allowing them to be burned without knowing it.  or any other reptiles that doesn't normally sit onm rocks that magically get warm.

To throw caution to the wind... I keep a hot-rock in with my Beardie.  It's an Exo Terra one that is thermostatically controlled.  It's been in the tank for 2 years.  Never burnt, never been a problem.  Found it quite reliable and, she loves it!
