fav substrate?
« on: October 12, 2006, 11:25:00 AM »

I was curious what everyone's favourite substrate is.

I prefer paper towel while they're in quarentine because you can see everything going on.  Jungle mulch or eco earth for the older/healthy ones.

Well substrate depends on the creature.  I know I prefer slate tile for my Beardie because it looks nice, is easy to clean, and it keeps his nails a good length.

well for my leo i personaly like sand ( i know im gonna have about 300 replies saying its bad). i like to keep it non calcium cuz calcium persuades them to eat it. and i also keep it at a certain size like i will put it through a a tea leaf strainer ( very very small). and it helps in clean up cuz it clumps when wet. and for my  Whites tree frog eco earth works well for me cuz its digestible and soft so they cant hurt themselves as easily jumping

I use lots of different substrates..

I use aspen for snakes(except garters),
millet for my leopard geckos(MUCH SAFER THAN SAND) Shocked
I use mix of coco-fiber(bed-a-beast) and cypress mulch for my tree frogs ..with moss on top of substrate.
Just coco-fiber for toads and turtles
green moss for young pacman frogs.

I also like Fern mulch for terrariums..Especially dart frogs..works great.

oh my where to start

My corns on aspen but doesn't get fed in his viv incase any goes down with is food.

My leos are on slate (one large peice) its a fab heat conducter which is great seen as though they need to absorb heat tthrough thier tummies.

My skinks are on forest bed not that they ever come down off thier branches other than to feed.

My anolis at the min are on half paper towel with a nest pot of forest bed at the end which i take out every day to check for eggs.

Forest bed is fab for humidity Smiley

My collered lizards (grump-ious git-ious) is on desert sand v finely sifted which he spends most of his time flicking out through the vents in his viv

its not so much that calci sand encourages them to eat it, even if its not calci sand they can still pick up small amounts which may become attached to thier food. Smiley
