Salamanders anyone?
« on: November 17, 2006, 07:58:01 AM »

Hey every one,

I'm just curious to know whether any one else here has salamanders? I have 3 Blotched Tiger Salamanders.

I found Quazi Sept.29/2003,on my front lawn, and there was a small forest and probably a swamp where my house now stands, and with the heavy construction going on at the time I didn't want to risk this little fellow getting smushed,at the time I figure he was maybe 1 1/2 years old. And about 7"..now he's close to 12".

Snapple, also called Snaps was found May 9th,2006 at my work. A man came to customer service, and told Tammy-the customer service worker- "There's a lizard in this"...Of course Tammy shrieks and jumps back, and I come running upto the customer service counter. It was a variety 12pk of Snapple..He wasn't physically in the bottles,he was underneath the syran wrap walking inbetween the bottle's necks. So the Store Manager came down and freaked out(She's not much of an amphibian lover)..and with the help of my Supervisor,we convinced the Store Manager to let me take it home. (My supervisor basically said Oh let kayla take it home, she has one of those things living with her already). Snaps was probably around the same age Quazi was when I found him..he was about 6"..now he's about 11".

Then, the most recent addition,is the tiny salamander. He's 4" maybe less, you can easily hold him on 3 or 4 fingers(depending on how big your fingers are)..My mom's friend lives 100 houses down from my place, and she phoned and left a message on the answer machine.."Oh my god get your daughter!! there's one of those nasty creepy crawly things she saves!....Im not leaving the house until she comes and gets it!! Its huge! massive!" ...Lol in reality, its a baby salamander. The ground was already frozen solid, and it was snowing out when I ran over to her house,so I took him in..he's already started burrowing, but in his tank so he's doing pretty good.

Quazi and Snaps share a 40gall,and soon to be getting a 55gall. The little fellow sits in a 25gall tank. I'll post pictures as soon as I take some more recent ones Cheesy

I have kept firebelly newts in the past but never salamanders, use to catch them up in the mountains but let them go.

I found some at my cottage in a pile of wood once. They were like black with a red stripe and about 1.5-2 inches long.

Here's some old photos of Quazi and Snapple.

Quazi is the lighter colored one,and Snaps is the darker. Snaps often goes greenish like Quazi though.Snaps markings are closer together than Quazi's aswell. They're both mole type salamanders meaning they burrow so they're alot harder to find than other salamanders.I've come across 4 in my the past 3 years. 2 I've kept,2 I released. The young one,I decided to release and allow it to burrow. Snaps, well seeing how he was found in a variety 12pack of Snapple beverage at Customer Service,I had to take him home.Quazi was found curled up on my front lawn, and there was heavy construction going on and I didnt want to risk him get hurt. 'Tyger' the first one,was found 11pm at night on a september night,my mom was on the phone and screamed..

You can see the size difference..Now Snapple is the size of Quazi.I'll take photos tomorrow.
