How long have you kept a crab for?
« on: November 09, 2006, 11:36:31 PM »

Just wanted to see how many years you have kept your crabs alive for. Crustations are very sensative creatures and not as easy tp take care of as some think. When I had crabs, I had many of them for the five years I had them. Just curious...

We have had hermies since July 2004. We have two of our orginal hermies left.  The other two died about a year ago during molts. The rest that we have, are from purchasing or adopting them in.

Moults can be stressfull for them that's for sure! It sounds like you are a great crab-keeper so keep up the good work! ~Heather Grin

They are misunderstood litte creatures who need a good provider to take care of them. It takes a lot of research too untill you finally get it right. It is rewarding to keep them alive for years and watch them get bigger. I use to wake up in the middle of the night just to watch them run around the tank! I swear I would go to bed and the tank would be beautifull and neat. I would wake up the next morning and come to find the tank is destroyed because they decided to have a party!!! Crabs are fun to have but they can be a lot of work.

I kept them several years ago and their care has changed alot, back when I kept them the care was very simple but has changed over the last few years alot Shocked. I guess thats why most of mine didnt live all that long Sad, but I was going by all the care that was availiable at the time and it defently wasnt what it should of been. I did have alot great experience when keeping them though, I loved keeping groups of them together, they seemed to like that best. Anyways I remember haveing 4-5 together at one point and I came in my room and hear this like low chirping noise Huh, I couldnt figure out what it was and looked all over my room, well finally I noticed it was coming from my hermit crab cage and when I looked in, I saw something I will never forget, they were all sitting in a circle like around a camp fire and were talking lol.

Yes, they are definately entertaining little babies. We love watching them, especially after doing a deep tank cleaning. They can be quite relaxing to watch. They can make quite a few different kind of noises, they are so cute, when they do, except for the ones when they are getting attacked.. lol..

Awww the chirping. It did not happen often, (or maybe i was asleep,) but when it did happen THAT was the coolest! I just got approved for my townhouse today. It will take time to build but when it is ready in about 2 months, I will be a crab keeper again! I am soooo excited!
