Adenovirus
« on: November 08, 2006, 09:21:11 PM »

This isnt a new illness but it seems to be flaring up in the bearded dragon community. There are breeders that are presently trying to sell sick babies. which will continue to spread the infection
here is a article from Reptile rooms giving info on the virus
http://www.reptilerooms.com/displayarticle135-flat.html
Here is a topic where a breeder is being comfronted for sales.

if you have multiple beardeds I would recommend getting them tested for the virus. or if you plan to get another bearded in the future that way you know you wont be infecting another baby

It seems that adeno has not had the research it deserves just from all the reading I have been doing on it.  I have followed the Fauna link about Sunshine Dragons, especially since I have 2 of their dragons.  I had both of mine tested and they came back negative.  Is this a true negative?  I don't know and may never know no matter how many times I test them.  Research seems to show that it is more then likely in all colonies of bearded dragons here in the US may have some form of adeno.  There really must be a lot more research before we can point fingers and make accusations.  I have seen no scientific research in the fauna link.  Just alot of back and forth stuff with no real proof.  I plan to have my two tested again right at breeding season, then have the babies tested as well.  I tend to believe that no matter what a breeder does, it is impossible to keep it out of a colony.  At least until the researchers have any definate answers for us.

Adeno has not had the research it deserves and I fully agree with that. There is no positive way of knowing the test is a true negative. due to the dragon needs to be shedding the sells at the time. but it is still worth the test in my eyes. In my research I have also found that you may not know you have a carrier until after you breed the dragons. and it shows in the babies. unless you have the test done with the electron microscope and the fixative it is very likely to be missed til you experience the deaths of the hatchlings.
Research has shown alot of colonies has had this in them. Mostly due to inbreeding within the beardeds.
I wasnt pointing fingers or making accusations just letting people know of this virus. There is alot of people who dont even know the virus exists and I feel they all should.

Do you know this for a fact or is it hearsay?  There are several reasons beardies die at a young age.  Over egging is the biggest problems with the big breeders.  I personally am having issues with one of my females who would not stop laying eggs to the point she nearly died.  She is being rehabbed by a good friend.  Lack of calcium during egging can cause premature death.  Getting sick during egging can also cause death.  I have one girl who got sick in the middle of her cycle, rather then save the eggs, I am working on her...she has a nasty URI and is on antibiotics.  Once she lays this clutch, they will have to be frozen because of the antibiotics the mother is on.  Be sure you have all the facts before making accusations.  The beardie could have died from adeno, but it could have been a number of other things as well.

Hello,

I think what Laura was trying to convey was the importance of being informed before making decisions on breeding your adults.
It was proven that Bruce of Sunshine Dragons had breeders with the Adeno.
If a breeder knowingly & maliciously sells infected babies to an unknowing public, then they have no ethics & should not be allowed to breed.  It is cruel to the animals, & not fair to the people purchasing them.
There are other pieces of information to the Sunshine Dragons story, but it is too detailed to get into, but, he is not a very nice man.

Yes Tracie. That is exactly my meaning behind the post..  It wasnt to specifically direct at Bruce. But the importance of getting tested. after working for months now with some adeno positive dragons. it is very important in my eyes for dragons comming from homes that have more than one tested. you never know what you might transfer to another healthy dragon. or to what should be a healthy clutch because the breeders arent tested. and that just continues spreading this awful virus

Hi
I have a bearded dragon and i think he is sick. We don't have any vets in our town to bring him to. I was hopping someone might know something. He has not ate in weeks. He wont open his eyes. I have put water on them just in case they were shut tight with what we call sleep. He still has strength to hod onto things. I am so worried about my little man. I have been giving his a supplement from the pet store and water, but i have been having to force feed him with a syringe.
He has had weight loss and doesn't move hardly at all except to hold onto whatever is under him.
Thank you
